Let's clear some things at start: A web site is not an artistic painting.

Too often I meet people that when I ask them "What do you think about this site" they stay 2 meters from the screen and say something like "Is OK, there are not images, not colorful enough..."

Fine, but do you put your web site framed on your wall or do you sit in front of the PC with the mouse in your hand? Real visitors do not see the web sites they visit as oil paintings in art gallery. Internet is totally different media; after all it is commercial graphic design. People like to find what they are looking for and be able to read it on the screen.

It does not mean that you need a black and white web site without images. I say, commercial art is something practical. It should not look like 99% of the energy was invested in the graphics, it should emphasize the content and give impression that is professionally designed and in harmony with the rest of the web site.

Here are some guidelines for better web site examination

It should load fast, if it is already loaded than press refresh or clear the browser cache and then reload the site. Visitor will not be impressed if it takes too long to load except if you web site offer a content that can not be found anywhere else on the Internet.
Try to guess what is the topic of the web site without reading. The next step is to do that with reading the headlines only.
Start reading the content, is there enough contrast, can you increase font size? Often people do not make the content easy readable. If there are big text blocks without bold parts or bullet that there is something wrong there.

Read other articles
